Job Description
Backend Engineer to design, develop, and maintain the core software agents that run on customer endpoints (Windows, Linux, macOS).
This role is critical for enabling data collection, remote execution, and secure communication between the endpoints (Actors) and our cloud platform (Backend).
The ideal candidate has deep expertise in Python for application logic, familiarity with lower-level languages like C/C++, and a strong command of networking protocols and operating system internals.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and test high-performance, low-footprint software agents/actors using Python.
Ensure the agent software is stable, reliable, and secure across multiple operating systems, specifically Windows and Linux environments.
Develop robust mechanisms for persistence, self-healing, and minimal resource utilization on the endpoint.
Implement secure and efficient inter-process communication (IPC) within the agent architecture.
Design and implement resilient communication modules that handle diverse network environments (high latency, low bandwidth).
Deeply understand and leverage various network protocols, including HTTP(S), SSH, and custom protocols for command and control.
Work with raw network data, including parsing and analyzing PCAP data for network monitoring and telemetry.
Implement advanced network control mechanisms, such as configuring host-level firewalls (iptables/nftables on Linux or Windows Firewall) and managing proxies.
Integrate the agent with the central cloud backend (APIs, message queues) and ensure data is transferred reliably and securely.
Develop comprehensive unit and integration tests to guarantee high code quality and testability across different OS platforms.
Utilize and manage version control with Git and participate in rigorous code reviews.
Collaborate with QA and DevOps teams on agent deployment, monitoring, and release pipelines.
Required Qualifications
3+ years of experience in backend or systems software development, focusing on agent/client-side applications.
Expert proficiency in Python (including concurrency and low-level system calls).
Strong understanding of operating system fundamentals for both Linux and Windows (e.g., process management, file systems, permissions).
In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP and common network protocols, including HTTP(S) and TLS/SSL.
Experience in network programming, including packet capture analysis (PCAP) or socket programming.
Familiarity with host-based security controls, firewall configuration (iptables), and network segmentation.
Proficiency with Git and agile development methodologies.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience developing with network proxies (forward/reverse) or tunneling technologies.
Prior experience in security (Endpoint Detection and Response – EDR, anti-virus, monitoring) or IT Operations Management (ITOM) domains.
Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) for connecting agent data to backend services.
