As a Network Engineer, you will work as part of a global team on the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of high-end routers and switches in a multi-vendor environment. You will work closely with internal and external organizations on new installations; capacity upgrades; development of organizational standards; and advanced troubleshooting to ensure the continued growth and stability of our global platform.Install, configure, and maintain Cisco and Juniper routers using command line as well as Linux tools.
Work on cross-functional teams in support of new deployments
Configure and monitor complex peering relationships via BGP (route-maps, communities, and/or filters) as well as high capacity data circuits (1G, 10G, 100G Ethernet circuits)
Collaborate with senior team members and network architects on traffic optimization
Work with vendors and internal organizations to build out large points of presence across the globe
Enforce existing standards and ensure consistent adherence to published policies
Collaborate with the team on templates and standards for router deployments and update documentation accordingly. Create and maintain detailed documentation on router configuration and non-standard setups
Escalate affectively internally and externally to resolve provider connectivity issues, working closely with our NOCC
Provide training and support to junior engineers and internal organizations
Screen/interview new candidates, mentor junior team members
Participate in an on-call rotation
Travel occasionally, as required
About the TeamThe Network Engineering team is a highly skilled group of individuals that work on various technologies including DWDM, Switches, Routers, NetApp Filers, and other special Akamai services.
QualificationsRequired Education and ExperienceThe Network Engineer is professional occupation, which requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, related field or 5-7 years experience in similar roles.
Required Skills
Minimum of 5 years hands-on BGP experience with a large service provider organization including experience in one or more of the following areas: configuring route-maps, communities, and/or filters.
Minimum of 5 years experience managing and troubleshooting Cisco & Juniper routers and switches
Minimum of 3 years experience in IP network design and routing architectures
Minimum of 3 years experience in Linux/Unix and related tools
Minimum of 3 years experience in Ethernet networking technologies in one or more of the following areas: VLANs, VLAN aggregation, 802.1Q, Spanning Tree, LACP, PAgP and/or security concepts
Desired SkillsFamiliarity with protocol analyzers and circuit debugging/test equipment
Experience with Juniper and other router vendors.
Understanding of end-to-end data flows and traffic patterns
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to tune capacity and improve performance across platforms
Must be an organized self-starter, able to deliver assigned tasks on time, and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.
