Huntley College of Agriculture offers a variety of applied science programs in Agricultural Science, Animal Health Science, Animal Science, Food Science & Technology, Nutrition Science and Dietetics, and Plant Science, as well as management and technology programs in Agribusiness & Food Industry Management and Apparel Merchandising & Management. Department of Plant Science:The Plant Science Department is a close-knit, experiential learning focused community where students get to know their professors well. We provide a unique integrative approach to Plant Science-related undergraduate and graduate programs that recognizes the strong disciplinary interdependencies of professional orientation and culture, basic societal needs, lifestyles, and social and environmental responsibility. We emphasize high-impact teaching practices to develop an inclusive and highly skilled workforce of Cal Poly Pomona graduates in sustainable production agriculture; urban and controlled environment agriculture; and plant science across the green industries from water resources and irrigation design, arboriculture, and sports turf management, to public horticulture and natural resources conservation.Our expanding faculty offers a Bachelor of Science to over 210 undergraduate students in the Plant Science Major, with the opportunity for all Cal Poly Pomona students to minor in Urban and Community Agriculture, Horticulture, Water Resources and Irrigation Design, Soil Science, Pest and Disease Management, and Agronomy. Additional cropping is interspersed across 325 acres on campus, including three vineyards, an heirloom citrus block, a coffee varietal trial, avocados, numerous subtropical and rare fruit horticultural plantings, and our faculty-mentored, student-run Microfarm.Position description:The person appointed to this position will teach in one or more areas ofPLANT SCIENCEthat integrate one or more of the four foundational ethnic studies disciplines:African American, Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x, Indigenous People/s, and Asian American and Pacific Islander studies. Alternatively, the successful candidate will teach in an area ofETHNIC STUDIESthat aligns with one or more Plant Science subdisciplines (please see below).We welcome applications from individuals at various stages of their academic careers, such as advanced ABD candidates, postdoctoral fellows, junior faculty on both tenure and non-tenure tracks, teaching faculty, scholars in contingent roles, those in research and teaching positions outside of traditional academia, as well as independent scholars, to submit their applications. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. by the start of employment.The new faculty member will have demonstrated potential for excellence in interdisciplinary undergraduate teaching that integrates Plant Science & Ethnic Studies, and mentor undergraduates and master's students on research and community engagement service-learning projects. Teaching responsibilities will include general plant science courses with existing curriculum, and new undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate's area of expertise. The new faculty member will be expected to assist in curriculum development, serve on department, college, and university committees, and engage in professional development activities. The teaching assignment is 3 courses fall semester/3 courses spring semester in the first two years and 4/4 in the years following, with course-reduction opportunities for research, service, and teaching initiatives.The faculty member will have teaching and scholarly expertise that emphasize approaches to Plant Science with a specialized knowledge in one or more of the historically racialized groups that originally established Ethnic Studies: Indigenous People/s, African American, Latinx American, and/or Asian American communities. Areas of application related to Plant Science could include (in alphabetical order) agroecology, agronomy, apiculture, crop ecology, environmental science, environmental toxicology, ethnobiology, ethnobotany, native plant ecology, urban/community agriculture, or a related field. Fields of expertise may include interdisciplinary training relevant to environmental justice, food justice, sustainable agriculture, and/or traditional ecological knowledge.The new faculty member will be part of Cal Poly Pomona's Faculty Cluster Hire (Ethnic Studies Affinity Group) to advance Ethnic Studies and an Inclusive Curriculum from different disciplinary and methodological vantage points. Faculty hired as part of this cluster will join an emerging and vibrant community of practice and can engage with the new and permanent Office of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies Teaching & Scholarship . This is a space for collaboration across disciplines, mentorship, and professional development programming. The faculty member will be a part of the community advancing the new California State University Ethnic Studies requirement. The new Ethnic Studies requirement is a 3-unit General Education and graduation requirement that encompasses one or more of the four historically racialized groups, named above.
